We love learning about sustainable construction

I love learning like I really love it. I always want to know more about building and become a better builder. Why? Because it's the only way our industry will change. Unfortunately, continued improvement in the industry is not mandated, but this does not stop us from wanting to learn more. So why is this important for builders in Melbourne?

Sustainable building practices are constantly evolving, driven by advancements in technology, materials, and regulations. Education in this field ensures that sustainable builders remain at the forefront of these developments. Attending relevant workshops, seminars, and courses helps builders stay updated on the latest sustainable construction techniques, eco-friendly materials, and energy-efficient technologies.

Governments and regulatory bodies are increasingly implementing stringent sustainability standards and building codes. Our NCC has changed but there has been little education on this. You would think that those changing the rules would make us learn them. Well they are lazy, and it's more of an option. Sustainable builders must stay informed about these changes and ensure their projects comply with evolving regulations. There are many activities that often include sessions on legal updates and compliance, ensuring builders can navigate these changes effectively.

Sustainable home builders are expected to possess specialised knowledge in areas such as green building materials, energy-efficient systems, and renewable energy sources. There are so many greenwashing materials and products out there that you need to be aware of what products really make a difference and what is just marketing. It allows us to be informed and make educated decisions.

Today's homeowners are increasingly conscious of the environmental impact of their homes. Sustainable builders in Melbourne who further educate themselves are better equipped to meet the expectations of environmentally conscious clients. They can provide valuable insights into energy-efficient design, sustainable building materials, and cost-effective green technologies. It also allows them to network with others in this space. I can tell you that by being a Passive House builder in Melbourne, I have been able to become close with other like-minded people and it has allowed me to develop personally, as a business and as a Passive House expert.

So, whilst CPD points are not enforced or even really encouraged, we still log what we do. To be transparent, we thought we would list what further education we have done this year

  • Attended and spoke at the Australian Passive House conference in Sydney, which went on for two days

  • Completed the introductory course into the Living Building Challenge

  • Attended the ArchiBuild Expo in Melbourne

  • Attended the Australian Building Physics Forum for the day

  • Attended some of the VBA Practitioner Education Series

  • Have begun studies to become an accredited member of the Living Building Challenge

  • Have attended some of the Sustainable Building Alliance webinars

  • Listened to a number of podcasts regulary such as The Undercover Architect, build show network, outlier podcast, Healthy Home Design, and Sustainable Builders Yak

  • Read, and read alot. Some of our favourite books we have read this year include the old eco handbook and An Australian-Based Study on Airtightness and Moisture Management.

And this is just the start. Each year we want to be better, and we feel that this is an important step to allow us to work on sustainable buildings in Melbourne.
