CHATFIELD PROJECT -
KINGSVILLE RENOVATION

The brief from the client was simple - "we want this to perform well". Using this approach, the team from Altereco Design carefully designed this renovation and extension project in Kingsville.

Clad in a mixture of corrugated zinc and Silvertop Ash shiplap timber, we spent extra care behind the final finishes to make sure this home was as airtight as possible. We insulated to the highest level that we could - R2.7 insulation was installed in all external walls, R2.5 insulation was used under the existing timber subfloor and R5+ in the ceilings. All windows were solid timber with a natural stain but more importantly, they were double glazed with low e glass designed to optimise performance. Gas was removed from the property so all appliances were electric. Although this house was not Passive House certified, we used some of their key principles to ensure this house was built to maximise performance.

Inside, the design is extremely functional with various small spaces. A pitched roof in the kitchen and living provides plenty of natural light with north facing highlight windows and the polished concrete floor provides the home with thermal mass to help retain its warmth in summer.
