Our approach to being a Sustainable Builder

Carland Constructions dives headfirst into extraordinary projects that make us do a happy construction dance - the kind that perfectly syncs with our purpose and values. We take immense pride in these ventures, where creativity and fun combine to build something remarkable.

Our thoughts are clear and simple. We believe all homes should be built to the highest standards where the health of the occupants is put before anything else. They should be high performing, comfortable and require little energy to run.

What do we do?

We have a passion for bringing sustainably designed homes to life!

We want to build a more energy-efficient, comfortable and healthier home every time we build.

We challenge the norm to chase after outcomes that are inspired by and aim to surpass those that have come before, as we constantly push the boundaries of what's possible.

Above all, we prioritise building a sustainable home. One that

  • preserves resources

  • is a safe and comfortable place to live free of mould and condensation

  • a place that is multi-generational

  • only works with those who share the same passion in sustainable design and building like us

That Buzzword Sustainability

Sustainable design, green builder, eco-friendly home, low carbon, energy-efficient design. We see these words everywhere, and it's almost impossible to escape them. Unfortunately, the building industry is saturated with these buzzwords to make it sound like we are all doing the right thing. It has hit a point where it has become so confusing that we no longer understand what these words mean.

But what does a sustainable home mean to us? Well, it’s simple

If it doesn't last, it doesn't matter

There is nothing more unsustainable than having to build a home twice. That's twice the effort, twice the carbon emissions, and twice the environmental impact. To avoid this, we must start by building our homes to last not one or two generations but by three to five generations. Those homes that last should be able to be tested in 50 years and have the same results as they did the day they were completed.

A true Sustainable Home will…

  1. Draw on building science to tell us how to construct our homes.

  2. Be designed to account for the ongoing energy consumption and energy source.

  3. Be a healthy place to live and not have any adverse effects on the occupants of the home.

  4. Limit the negative impact on external systems and environments.

  5. Be resilient and be able to perform at a high level for multiple generations.

  6. Take into account the cycle of demolition now and in the future.

Why we collaborate

Collaboration in construction brings together diverse expertise, from architects and engineers to builders and contractors. By fostering open lines of communication, project teams can streamline workflows, reduce delays, and enhance overall efficiency. Effective collaboration minimises errors, improves coordination, and ensures a smooth workflow, resulting in a better experience for the client.

Collaboration allows you to create a team in which each member brings their skills to the table. A designer knows how to design, but you can't expect them to give you building and pricing advice. A builder knows how to build, but they don't know how to design!

Our Standard

We don't hide this; in fact, we plaster it all over our site hoarding.

We want people to know what we stand for.

We want people to know we demand better.

We want people to know we don’t do this because it's cool but rather that we care about it.

We want others to learn so they can also build better buildings.

Who do we work with?

We only work with architects, designers and clients who share the same common interests of building better. Just like clients select who they want to work with, we also select whom they want to work with. We do not just take on any sustainable building. We take each project on its own merit, as everyone project has its own unique challenges.

We find that everyone is a “sustainable builder” and “sustainable architect” but is this a non-negotiable for them?

For us, it is!

We just don’t take on any project because it looks fancy and will come up nicely in a magazine. The home must tick all the boxes on our minimum standard checklist! If it doesn’t, it isn’t for us!

For us, we are open that Passive House Construction (Passivhaus) in Melbourne is the golden standard of construction. We believe all homes should be built with this in mind.

What’s Our Future

We promise to build a better home every time we build. We will always look to push the boundaries on what is possible in high-performance homes and Passivhaus construction in Melbourne. We want to retrofit old buildings that require an urgent performance upgrade so our clients can extend the life of the building, we want to learn more about building science, and we want to push the envelope in mixing Passivhaus with architecture in Melbourne.

Actually, we want to see everyone do this.
