who are carland constructions
Yes, Carland Constructions is another sustainable building company based in Melbourne, but we are not your standard builder; we do things differently.
We do things better than those around us and look to taking you on an enjoyable journey through the construction process, one that is usually scary and daunting. We want to make this a positive experience for everyone involved.
So who are we? Why are we unique? Why are we different?
Carland Constructions is a residential building company that builds energy-efficient and healthy homes in the inner west and north of Melbourne. We specialise in Passive House construction and high-performance homes, mixing architecture and sustainable building practices. We have worked and continue to work with a number of well-recognised architects and designers, bringing to life their designs.
We understand that all homes are different. They come in different shapes and sizes, but they should all be a place where you feel comfortable and safe. All homes should be built to the highest standard where the health of their occupants is put before everything else. They should be high performing but also require little energy to run. A home should be built to last, future-proofed, personal and designed to cater to the individuals living there.
To us, this is the ultimate sustainable home.
For us, the building is simple. We know what we don't know and surround ourselves with skilled and trusted tradespeople. We know we are only as good as those around us, and we look at ourselves as the link of the construction project, bringing together architects, designers, consultants, clients, trades and anyone else involved in the project. But we can sit here and tell you how good we are, how we are "sustainable" builders in Melbourne, but that means nothing. We are more than a buzzword and live and breathe this stuff. We love to nerd out on building science, educating everyone around us on specialised construction techniques to improve a home's durability and energy efficiency.
Our construction approach is not an apples-for-apples situation. We see it as comparing an old run-down car to a brand-new Tesla. Although the old car might get you from A to B, the Tesla is safer, more economical, faster, more comfortable and has all the bells and whistles. There is pride taken in the finer details. We take pride in how our walls are constructed and wrapped, how our windows are installed and taped, how tight our air barrier is, how we build our ventilated walls, how continuous our insulation can be, how healthy the air is inside, and how comfortable can we make our clients feel in their own home. We know that if we take pride in these items, the rest will take care of themselves.

durability, energy efficiency, comfort
So many homes are still being built like it's 1950, and it's time we stopped accepting it. Why do we care so much about building science and passive house construction? Because we believe a home should prioritise your health, comfort, and well-being. We want to challenge what's possible in the building industry and create homes that are simply built better.
A home shouldn't be a leaky tent exposed to every element. Unfortunately, many Australian homes are still draughty, waste energy, and are uncomfortable to live in. We've accepted that mouldy bathrooms are okay and that it’s normal for our homes to be colder inside than out in winter. The reality is, our homes can make us sick. Mould and poor ventilation can lead to sick building syndrome, causing eye and throat irritation, fatigue, and respiratory issues. This is why building science and a holistic approach are so important.
Most people are only interested in the final finishes, but what goes on behind the walls is far more important. The “don’t worry, it’ll be covered up” attitude in building is what drives us crazy. Our passion for passive house construction and building science means we obsess over the details that no one sees, like airtightness, water management, and insulation. We know that if we get these details right, the home will be durable, healthy, and high-performing for years to come.
